Getting Rid of the Stump in a Small Yard
Stump grinding turns a leftover stump into wood chips, taking it below the surface so the spot can be planted, paved over or simply walked on. In Jersey City yards, where every square foot counts, a stump in the middle of a small yard or against a fence is worth removing.
Equipment that fits city yards
Large tow-behind grinders cannot reach most city backyards. Compact walk-behind grinders can pass through standard gates and narrow side passages, and some jobs can be done with equipment carried in sections. We look at your access at the estimate and bring the machine that fits.
How deep we grind
A typical grind takes the stump several inches below the surrounding soil, enough to lay sod or topsoil over it. If you plan to plant a new tree in the same spot, pave over it or build on it, tell us; that may call for a deeper grind or removing more of the major roots.
Before we grind: utilities and nearby structures
Stump grinding goes below the surface, so buried lines matter. New Jersey law requires a call to New Jersey One Call (811) before digging, and we arrange the markout before grinding. Stumps tight against foundations, sidewalks or walls are ground carefully to protect the structure, sometimes leaving a thin margin of wood.
What happens to the roots
Grinding removes the stump and the root flare near the surface, but the deeper roots stay in the ground and decay over the following years. That is normal and rarely causes problems. As they break down, the ground over the old stump can settle slightly, so a little extra topsoil after the first season keeps the spot level with the rest of the yard.
Chips: keep them or haul them
Grinding a stump produces a surprising volume of chips. You can keep them as mulch, or we can haul them away and fill the hole with topsoil. Both options are listed on the quote.
Planting in the same spot
If you want a new tree where the old one stood, grinding alone may not be enough. The chips and the remaining roots break down over time and the soil settles, so the spot is usually dug out, the chips removed and fresh topsoil brought in before planting. Moving the new tree a few feet to one side often works better. If a town ordinance requires a replacement tree, check its list of approved species and sizes first.
Street-tree stumps
If the stump is in the sidewalk strip, it belongs to a City tree, and work around City trees requires a permit in Jersey City. Many towns grind their own street-tree stumps when they replant; we can tell you who to call.

How It Works
1. Measure and mark
We measure the stump, check access and arrange the utility markout.
2. Grind
The stump and major surface roots are ground below grade.
3. Chips
Chips are left as mulch or hauled away and backfilled.
4. Clean up
The area is raked and the sidewalk or path is blown clean.

Stump Grinding Questions
How much does stump grinding cost?
National guides put most stumps around $2 to $5 per inch of diameter, about $250 on average, with a minimum charge near $100. Additional stumps on the same visit usually cost less each.
Will the stump grow back after grinding?
Most trees do not regrow once the stump is ground below grade. A few species can send up sprouts from the roots; those can be cut back if they appear.
Can you grind a stump next to my fence or foundation?
Yes, carefully. We grind close and leave a small margin where the machine could damage the structure.
Do I have to grind the stump?
No. Some owners leave it, and an old stump will rot over years. Grinding is worth it if the stump is in the way, a trip hazard, or where you want to plant or pave.
