Tree Removal in Leonia, NJ

Tree Work on Leonia's Hillside Lots

Tree removal in Leonia starts with the grade. The borough sits on the western slope of the Palisades, climbing from about 5 feet above sea level on its western edge to roughly 318 feet in the east. A backyard here can drop a full story between the patio and the back fence, and a tall oak on that kind of slope does not come down the way a tree on flat ground does.

Why a slope changes the plan

On a hillside, cut wood wants to roll, and a bucket truck or crane needs level, solid footing that a sloping lawn may not give it. We take these trees apart from the top: a climber works through the crown piece by piece, ropes steer where each section lands, and logs are bucked short enough to move by hand. When a tree hangs over the house and the yard is too steep for machines, we check whether a crane can reach it from the street.

Leonia's permit for trees 8 inches and up

According to the borough's ordinance guide, removing any tree measuring 8 inches in diameter or larger needs a permit under § 275-15, handled by the Building Department (201-592-5780, ext. 253 or 265). The guide lists the cost as $20 plus a replacement fee, and the replacement fee is waived for dead or diseased trees when you provide proof. If a tree poses an imminent danger, the guide says it may come down without a permit first, but the borough must be notified within 7 days with photos and documentation. Please confirm the current rules with the borough before work begins; we are describing the guide, not giving legal advice.

Keeping limbs clear of sidewalks and streets

Under § 275-14, owners are expected to keep branches pruned to 8 feet of clearance over sidewalks and streets and to remove dead or hazardous limbs. The same guide says the borough may order a hazardous or diseased tree removed, and if the owner does not act, the borough does the work and bills the owner. Keeping limbs trimmed back from sidewalks and streets is one way to stay on the right side of that rule; ask the borough if you are unsure what it expects for your frontage.

Borough trees stay with the borough

Planting anything in the strip between sidewalk and curb takes Shade Tree Commission approval, and residents may not remove or damage borough trees, even ones that have lifted a sidewalk. Our work stays on trees inside your property line. For a curbside tree, write to ShadeTreeCommission@LeoniaNJ.gov.

Old houses, old trees

Leonia was settled in 1668, and its oldest dwelling, the Cole-Allaire House, dates to about 1765. In the early twentieth century it became an artists' colony around Harvey Dunn's Leonia School of Illustration, founded in 1915. Lots from those eras can carry trees that have grown for generations right beside foundations, porches and stone walls. We protect those features with controlled rigging and ground mats, then finish with cleanup and haul-away. Call (201) 957-7596 to book an estimate.

Leonia Questions

Does every tree in my Leonia yard need a permit?

The borough's guide puts the permit threshold at 8 inches in diameter, so smaller trees fall below it. Rules can change, so check with the Building Department before scheduling.

A storm left a tree in danger of falling. Do I need a permit first?

The guide says trees posing an imminent danger may be removed without a permit first, but the borough must be notified within 7 days with photos and documentation. Ask the Building Department how this applies to a tree that has already come down, and take pictures before anything is moved.

Can you take down a tree at the bottom of a steep backyard?

In many cases, yes. We rig the pieces uphill or lower them in short sections, and carry wood out by hand when machines cannot get footing. We look at the route out during the estimate.

Will I owe the replacement fee for a dead tree?

According to the borough's guide, the replacement fee is waived for dead or diseased trees if you provide proof. Ask the Building Department what proof it accepts.
