Tree Service Sized for Guttenberg
Tree removal in Guttenberg is close-quarters work. The town has just 0.19 square miles of dry land, running about four blocks end to end, and the 2020 census counted 12,017 people there, making it the most densely populated incorporated municipality in the United States. Trees grow in small front yards, sidewalk pits and the grounds of larger buildings, often within a few feet of a wall, a car or an overhead line.
Parking the truck comes first
Guttenberg had about 4.39 miles of roadway as of 2010, nearly all of it maintained by the town. With that little street, setup is settled before the first cut:
- Where the truck and chipper can stand without choking a narrow street
- Whether cones or a short closure are needed, and who must approve them
- How far wood has to travel by hand from the tree to the truck
- Which time of day keeps traffic and parking trouble to a minimum
The town's replacement rule: an Eastern Redbud
Guttenberg handles trees in Chapter 13 of its code. Section 13-10, most recently amended in May 2024, defines a hazard tree, for example one that is dead or dying, carries an infectious disease or insect infestation, or is causing obvious damage to foundations or sidewalks. The same section says a replacement must be an Eastern Redbud, planted within 60 days and monitored by the applicant for two years. A removed or hazard tree that goes unreplaced more than 60 days past the tree removal permit brings an $850 fee owed to the town. Ask town hall how the permit step works for your tree before any removal.
Planning around a smaller tree
Eastern Redbud is a small tree compared with the big shade trees that sometimes outgrow Guttenberg's tight lots. If you are replacing one of those, the new tree can go in at or near the old spot once the stump is ground low enough, and a smaller tree there means less root pressure on paving and less limb work over the years.
Spotted lanternfly and tree-of-heaven
On February 1, 2023, the New Jersey Department of Agriculture announced that every county in the state was now inside its spotted lanternfly quarantine zone, and it notes the insect prefers tree-of-heaven as a host. If one of those has seeded itself along a fence or foundation on your lot, removal plus stump grinding is an option to weigh, and we can go over it during the estimate.

Guttenberg Questions
Where will your truck park on my block?
That gets worked out on the estimate visit. We look at the street width, nearby hydrants and driveways, and how far the wood has to be carried, then plan the setup. If cones or a short closure are needed, we tell you up front who has to approve it.
What counts as a hazard tree under Guttenberg's code?
Section 13-10 lists criteria such as a tree that is dead or dying, has an infectious disease or insect infestation, blocks traffic signs or passage where pruning has not fixed it, or is causing obvious damage to structures like foundations or sidewalks. Trees removed only for development do not count. The town makes the official call.
Do I really have to plant an Eastern Redbud after a removal?
Section 13-10 names the Eastern Redbud as the replacement tree and sets a 60-day planting window, with an $850 fee if a removed or hazard tree is not replaced. Confirm the details with town hall, since the code can be amended.
Can a tree right next to my building's foundation be removed?
Yes, usually by taking it down in sections and lowering each piece away from the wall. We grind the stump and can cut back surface roots near the foundation. Questions about the foundation itself belong with a building contractor or engineer.
