Tree Work in a Town With No Spare Room

Tree removal in Cliffside Park is mostly a question of space. The borough covers just 0.96 square miles, all of it land, and the 2020 Census counted 26,875 residents per square mile, the highest density of any of Bergen County's 70 municipalities and among the highest anywhere in New Jersey. Houses stand close together, backyards are small, and a tree that looks simple from the street can be boxed in by fences, garages and a neighbor's roof on three sides.

So the first thing we do on a free estimate here is walk the route: from the curb, down the side path or through the garage, to the tree. That route decides the method, the crew size and the price, and it all goes into a written quote before any work is scheduled.

Rigging instead of felling

There is rarely room to drop a whole tree in Cliffside Park. We climb or bring a lift if one fits, then cut short sections and let them down by rope into a cleared spot. Heavy wood gets cut into pieces small enough to carry by hand when the only path out is a narrow walkway. If a crane can reach over the house from the street, a crane-assisted removal can lift whole sections over the roof and onto the truck, which can cut down on how much has to be carried through the yard.

Getting the wood out

Cleanup and haul-away are part of every job. On tight lots that means planning where the chipper sits on the street, protecting walkways with plywood where needed, and making repeated trips with hand carts. If the only access is through the house or a finished basement, tell us on the visit so we can plan floor and doorway protection.

What the borough code says about removals

Cliffside Park's rules sit in § 18-13.8 of the zoning chapter, the Tree Removal-Replacement Ordinance (Ord. 2016-09, amended 2024). Before a street tree measuring 2.5 inches DBH or larger comes out, or any other tree measuring 6 inches DBH or larger, the owner files an application with the Zoning Official, and the code says no removal may happen until municipal officials have reviewed and approved it. The replacement table lists one to four new trees depending on trunk size, with a $200 per-tree fee to the Cliffside Park Tree Conservatory Fund, and up to $500 per tree into a fund if replacements can't be planted on the property. Check the present procedure with the Zoning Office first; we are describing the code, not advising on it.

Street trees in front of your house

The ordinance defines a street tree as one planted in the sidewalk, the planting strip or the public right-of-way next to the road. Those trees fall under the borough's rules even though they sit in front of your home, so ask the borough before anyone cuts them. For trees fully on your own lot, we can trim back limbs that hang over the roof, the driveway or the neighbor's yard, or take the tree down once approval is in hand.

Stumps in small spaces

Compact stump grinders fit through standard gates, so a stump in a fenced back corner may be reachable for grinding below grade; we confirm on the visit. Grindings can be left to fill the hole or hauled away. Ask about this on the estimate and it goes in the quote.

Cliffside Park at a Glance

  • Densest town in Bergen County. At 26,875.5 people per square mile in 2020, Cliffside Park ranked first of 70 municipalities in Bergen County and among the five densest in New Jersey, on just 0.96 square miles of land.
  • Where the amusement park stood. Palisades Amusement Park operated from 1898 to 1971 on 38 acres, partly in Cliffside Park and partly in Fort Lee. After it closed, the site was redeveloped with high-rise apartment buildings.
  • Application before removal. Under § 18-13.8, a tree removal application goes to the Zoning Official, and no street tree of 2.5 inches DBH or more, or other tree of 6 inches DBH or more, may be removed until municipal officials approve it; a violation can bring a fine of as much as $2,000.
  • Homes and values. About 51.4% of Cliffside Park housing units are lived in by their owners; the median value for those homes is $588,200 per 2020-2024 survey estimates. The borough's population was estimated at 26,539 in 2025.

Cliffside Park Questions

The tree is behind my house and there's no driveway to the backyard. Can it still come out?

Yes. We take it down in small sections, lower the pieces by rope, and carry the wood out by hand or cart along whatever path exists. Where the street allows, a crane can lift sections over the house instead. We price the method that fits your lot after seeing it.

My neighbor's tree hangs over my yard. What can you do?

We can quote trimming the branches on your side. Talk with your neighbor first, since removing or seriously damaging their tree is a different matter, and check with the borough if the work would count as removal under § 18-13.8.

Do I have to pay into the Tree Conservatory Fund?

The § 18-13.8 replacement table lists a $200 per-tree fee to the Cliffside Park Tree Conservatory Fund alongside the replacement planting. How it applies to your tree is the Zoning Official's call, so ask them before scheduling.

Where does the chipper go on a crowded street?

We look at parking on the estimate visit and plan the truck and chipper position, to keep blockage to a minimum. If a permit or notice is needed to use street space, we tell you ahead of time.
