Dead, Dying and Overgrown Trees in Kearny
Tree removal in Kearny can come down to a tree that has quietly died. A dead tree may not seem urgent until a limb drops on a car or a roof. Kearny's own property maintenance code names dead and dying trees as a hazard when they hang above ground level near people, so a gray, leafless crown is worth dealing with on your schedule rather than after a storm forces the issue.
Three different parts of town
Kearny is split into the Kearny Uplands, the Kearny Meadows and South Kearny, where the Passaic and Hackensack rivers meet. Each part has its own mix of ground, from upland streets to low meadow land near the rivers, and the town covers 8.84 square miles of land, larger than most Hudson County municipalities.
Removal and pruning, not diagnosis
Our work is cutting: taking trees down, pruning out dead limbs and grinding stumps. We do not offer tree health checks, risk ratings or treatment. If you want an opinion on whether a living tree is sound, that is a question for a New Jersey licensed tree expert. Once you have decided what should go, here is what we can take on:
- A whole tree that you want removed
- Dead limbs hanging over the house, the driveway or the sidewalk
- Branches crowding gutters, siding or a garage roof
- Stumps left behind by earlier removals

Trees in the sidewalk strip
The street opening section of Kearny's code states that no trees within the sidewalk are to be disturbed or removed without the permission of the Mayor and Council. If the tree in question grows between the sidewalk and the curb, start with the town before arranging any work. For trees fully on your own lot, make a quick call to the town as well, since other rules may apply.
Hedges, corners and yard waste
Section 23-10.1 deals with brush, hedges and other plant life near the road, especially close to intersections where drivers need to see. After written notice from the Police Department, an owner has 10 days to cut that growth back, and Section 23-10.2 lets the Town Forester step in if it is not done. When we remove or trim a tree, the wood, brush and chips are hauled away with us rather than left at the curb.
Work we do in Kearny
Full removals, crown cleaning and thinning, raising branches over driveways, stump grinding, emergency storm calls and crane-assisted removals for trees too damaged to climb. Every job includes cleanup and haul-away.
What to Know in Kearny
- Dead trees in the property maintenance code. Section 17-8.9(b) of the Kearny code lists dead and dying trees among loose and overhanging objects that are a hazard to people nearby. Section 17-1.1 also bars letting dead and dying trees, stumps and brush accumulate on a lot.
- Sidewalk trees need Council permission. Section 23-20.5(b) states that no trees within the sidewalk shall be disturbed or removed without permission of the Mayor and Council. Check with Town Hall ahead of any work on a curbside tree.
- Clear sight lines at corners. Under Section 23-10.1, brush, hedges and other plant life within 10 feet of a roadway and within 25 feet of an intersection must be cut to no more than 2½ feet high when needed for public safety, within 10 days of written notice from the Police Department. Section 23-10.2 lets the Town Forester do the work and lien the cost if the owner does not.
- Parks along the river and at the town line. Riverbank Park is a chain of small parks along the Passaic, the largest on Bunnyland Hill. West Hudson Park, about 43.4 acres, is shared with Harrison and was originally designed by Charles N. Lowrie.
- Housing at a glance. QuickFacts puts Kearny's owner-occupancy at 42.9%, with owner homes at a $459,400 median value (2020 to 2024). The 2020 census counted 15,392 housing units.

Kearny Questions
The tree between my sidewalk and the curb is dying. Can I hire you to remove it?
Kearny's code says trees within the sidewalk are not to be disturbed or removed without permission of the Mayor and Council. Contact the town first. If they approve private removal, we can quote and schedule it.
Can you tell me whether my tree is healthy or dangerous?
No. Health checks and hazard assessments are tree expert work under New Jersey rules, and we do not offer them. If you have already decided to remove a tree or cut out dead branches, we can quote that work. Keep in mind that Kearny's property maintenance code treats dead and dying trees over people as a hazard, so the town may also have something to say about it.
Do I have to put the branches out for town pickup?
No. Cleanup and haul-away of wood, brush and debris come with every job, so nothing needs to go to the curb for collection.
Can you remove a tree in a narrow side yard next to a two-family house?
In most cases. We climb the tree, cut it into manageable pieces and lower them on ropes so they land in the clear space. Should the wood be too decayed for a climber, a crane parked on the street can lift sections out instead.
