Removing Trees Under the Secaucus Permit Rules
Tree removal in Secaucus usually involves a permit. In October 2025 the town updated its tree conservation rules, replacing a version last revised in 1993. Under the current approach, a Tree Removal Permit is needed before taking down any tree with a trunk of three inches or more measured at breast height, and that includes standing dead trees. So our first step in Secaucus is usually paperwork timing, not chainsaws.
How the permit process works, step by step
- Fill out the town's tree removal application.
- Tag each tree you want removed.
- Include a sketch showing where those trees stand and where any replacements would go.
- The Administrator of Tree Conservation will schedule an inspection within 20 days, according to the town's FAQ.
- Once issued, the permit stays valid for 12 months.
We can walk the yard with you during the free estimate, measure which trunks appear to be over the three-inch mark and hand you a written estimate to keep with the application.
Replacement trees and the Tree Fund
When a healthy tree is taken down, the town may require replacement planting from its approved species list. If a lot has no room for the required trees, the FAQ describes a nonrefundable payment of $400 per tree to the Secaucus Tree Fund. Dead, damaged, diseased, hazardous or invasive trees are exempt from fees and replacement, but they still need the permit. Read the current rules or call the town to confirm what applies to your property.
Soft ground in the Meadowlands
Secaucus is essentially an island inside the Meadowlands, with the Hackensack River on the west and Penhorn and Cromakill creeks on the east, at an elevation of about seven feet. Low, wet ground can mean shallow roots and soft lawns. We spread plywood or mats under heavy equipment to protect turf and keep wheels from sinking, and we choose lighter gear when the yard is saturated.
Storm and flood exposure
After Sandy in 2012, the town made emergency repairs to the North End berm and later received $772,250 from FEMA for that work. Saturated ground can loosen the soil a tree is anchored in. If you decide a leaning or storm-broken tree needs to come down, call (201) 957-7596 and remember the permit step applies to dead and damaged trees too.
Our services in Secaucus
We remove and trim trees around single-family homes and townhouse yards, grind stumps so replacement trees can go in, handle emergency calls after storms, and bring in a crane for storm-wrecked trees nobody should climb. Every job ends with the wood and debris hauled away.
What to Know in Secaucus
- Permit at 3 inches, dead trees included. Secaucus requires a Tree Removal Permit before removing any tree with a trunk of 3 inches or greater measured at breast height, whether it is living or dead. Pruning that does not threaten a tree's survival does not need a permit, per the town's FAQ.
- Street trees and replacement fees. Removing a street tree in the town right-of-way requires a permit, and the FAQ lists a $400 per-tree fee for street tree removal unless the tree is exempt under Section 109-8(C). Replacement trees must come from the list in Section 109-17.
- The most open space in Hudson County. About 27.4% of Secaucus is open green space, the highest share of any Hudson County municipality. Schmidt's Woods in the North End is described as one of the last original hardwood forests in urban North Jersey.
- Laurel Hill. Laurel Hill, also called Snake Hill, is a diabase rock rising about 150 feet above the Meadowlands. The county park there covers about 104.5 acres.
- Home values and ownership. Per Census QuickFacts, half the homes (50.6%) are lived in by owners, and the median value for those is $571,900 (2020 to 2024), with a 2025 population estimate of 22,640.

Secaucus Questions
My tree is already dead. Do I still need a Secaucus permit?
According to the town's FAQ, yes. Standing dead trees need a Tree Removal Permit, though dead, diseased or hazardous trees are exempt from the fees and replacement requirements. The town may ask for a letter from a Licensed Tree Expert or Certified Arborist confirming the tree is dead; that letter is something to arrange separately. Check with the Administrator of Tree Conservation before removal.
How long does the permit take before you can start?
The town's FAQ says the inspection is scheduled within 20 days of the application. We set a work date once the permit is issued, based on the schedule at that time.
Do I need a permit just to trim branches?
The FAQ says pruning that does not affect the tree's viability does not require a permit. Heavy cuts that could kill or seriously weaken a tree are a different matter, so we keep trimming to sound pruning cuts and recommend asking the town if you are unsure.
Will you grind the stump so I can plant a replacement tree?
Yes. If the town requires replacement planting, grinding the old stump and removing the chips from the planting spot makes room for the new tree. We can grind just one area or the whole stump, depending on your plans.
