Private Trees and Borough Trees in North Arlington
Tree removal in North Arlington begins with one question: whose tree is it? The borough has been planting heavily, with more than 600 trees set out in the five years before spring 2023, including 55 flowering pears, zelkovas and red sunset maples along the Belleville Turnpike and nearby streets that year. Curbside trees planted at a homeowner's request remain borough property, even though the homeowner is asked to water and look after them.
Written notice before anyone touches a street tree
North Arlington's tree rules sit in Chapter 338. The borough's public works department has full and exclusive control over shade trees in public highways and parkways (§ 338-2A), apart from trees kept by the state or Bergen County. No one may cut, prune, remove or kill a tree on a street without prior written notice to the DPW (§ 338-3A). The DPW then has five working days to answer (§ 338-4A), and § 338-7 makes a replacement contribution mandatory when a shade tree is removed unless the DPW waives it in writing. Read the current code and confirm with the DPW before any work near the curb; we summarize it here, and it is not legal advice.
What we handle on private lots
- Taking out backyard trees that have outgrown a narrow lot
- Cutting limbs back from roofs, gutters and the line to the house
- Grinding stumps left over from old removals
- Clearing broken trees and hangers after high winds
On every job you get a free on-site estimate, a written quote, and cleanup and haul-away of wood and debris.
Digging near borough roots
Chapter 338 restricts digging closer than two feet to a street tree and calls for roots over one inch in diameter to be protected under DPW advice. That comes into play when a stump or a private tree stands next to the planting strip. We mark any nearby borough trees on the quote so grinding depth and position can be planned around them.
Houses packed between a cemetery and the river
Holy Cross Cemetery covers 208 acres, about one-eighth of the borough's land, and Riverside County Park's 85 acres run along River Road toward Lyndhurst. The homes fit into what remains, at roughly 6,625 people per square mile. A tall tree in a small yard can stand within reach of houses on both sides, so we dismantle it in sections and lower each piece on rigging lines.
Old ground, newer trees
In the 1750s the Schuyler Copper Mine here pumped water with a Newcomen steam engine, described as the first steam engine in North America, and the borough itself was incorporated in March 1896. If one of your trees is cracking, leaning or dropping large limbs, call (201) 957-7596 to set up a free estimate for its removal.
What to Know in North Arlington
- Holy Cross Cemetery. Established in 1915, Holy Cross Cemetery covers 208 acres, about one-eighth of the borough's land area, and holds almost 290,000 interments.
- Hundreds of new street trees. Mayor Daniel H. Pronti said in April 2023 that more than 600 trees had been planted in the borough over five years, as part of what the borough describes as a state-funded shade tree initiative.
- Curbside trees stay borough property. Under the borough's planting program, Public Works plants a requested tree in a curbside spot picked by the borough arborist to avoid buckled sidewalks and utility lines. The tree remains borough property and the homeowner waters and cares for it.
- Chapter 338 dates to 1992. North Arlington's Trees chapter was adopted September 15, 1992 (Ord. No. 1568) and gives the DPW five working days to respond to written notice about street tree work.
- Homes and values. North Arlington had 16,457 residents in 2020 on 2.48 square miles. About 44.4% of homes are owner-occupied, with a median value of $474,500 (Census, 2020 to 2024).

North Arlington Questions
Can I have the borough-planted tree by my curb taken out?
That tree is borough property. Chapter 338 requires prior written notice to the DPW before a street tree is cut, pruned or removed, and a replacement contribution may apply. Start with the DPW.
Does North Arlington require a permit for trees in my backyard?
Chapter 338 as posted is aimed at street and shade trees and does not set a general permit for private trees. NJDEP has required towns to adopt community-wide tree replacement ordinances, so ask the borough whether newer rules apply before scheduling.
How long does the DPW have to answer my notice?
Chapter 338 gives the DPW five working days, not counting weekends and holidays. If no written response arrives in that time, the code lets the applicant proceed. Keep a dated copy of what you sent.
Can you trim branches growing into power lines?
Limbs touching the main lines on the poles are the utility company's job, so call them first. Once the lines are clear and safe, we can cut limbs back from your roof, gutters and the line running to the house.
